Get your winter walking gear ready for action!
Whether
you are a weekend rambler or a lover of high hills and deep dales, you probably
rely heavily on your walking jacket to keep you warm and dry. From snow and sun, to wind and mud, your
outdoor kit is often exposed to the most extreme weather conditions and as such
requires meticulous care after holidays and long walks to avoid
deterioration. However, using the wrong
washing products before you apply any additional protective layers can be as
damaging as not washing at all.
Outdoor
clothing is usually made from specialist materials that work to repel water and
protect from wind chill, but which are also “breathable”, releasing unwanted
sweat and moisture - and by washing outdoor clothes in a washing machine you
risk damaging these special fabrics. Normal
washing powders and fabric conditioners can also cause a build up of detergent
which affects the coating of a garment, reducing its long term performance and
usefulness.
There
are a number of “specialist” products on the market that can help protect your
walking clothes, but when it comes to cleaning them it is the humble Liquid
Soap Flakes which will clean fragile micro-fibre fabrics without removing any
protective sealants you may have used.
Liquid Soap flakes, which are pre-dissolved for ease of use, are also
ideal for washing delicate fabrics such as silks and woollens.
“Many
people automatically go straight to the washing machine in order to get their
outdoor clothing spotlessly clean, but using this method with specialist
walking attire will damage the delicate fabric and result in detergent
build-up,” explains Bruce Maxwell, Managing Director of Dri-Pak.
“Washing
by hand with Liquid Soap Flakes is the best solution. They are strong enough to clean effectively,
but do not remove any protective layers or cause water to wick through the
fabric, meaning the performance of the garment will not be affected,” adds
Bruce.
Unlike
traditional Soap Flakes, Liquid Soap Flakes are machine washer friendly so can
be used on delicate machine washable fabrics, even on a cool wash. They also do not contain any enzymes or
optical brighteners making them ideal not only for delicate fabric, but for
people with sensitive skin.
Liquid Soap Flakes, which are palm oil free and do not contain any animal products, are available from Tesco and Waitrose stores throughout the UK.
